24 Hour Car Recovery: What to Do When You Break Down at Night

The short answer

If you break down at night, get yourself and your passengers somewhere safe first, switch on hazard lights and sidelights, then call a recovery service that runs around the clock. Auto Squad Recovery takes calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Share your exact location and describe the fault so the right truck is sent.

Safety first, recovery second

Darkness changes the risk. Other drivers see a stopped car later, and a dark coat on a grass verge is almost invisible. If you can, roll the car off the carriageway onto a hard shoulder, lay-by or side street. Put the hazards on, leave the sidelights on, and wear something light or reflective if you have it.

On a motorway or fast dual carriageway, get out on the passenger side and wait behind the barrier, well up the bank. Do not stand between the car and the traffic, and do not try to fix the car yourself in the dark. On a quiet residential street it is usually safer to wait inside with the doors locked.

What to tell the operator

A night-time call goes faster when you have the details ready:

  • Where you are — a road name, junction number, marker post or a dropped pin sent by WhatsApp.
  • The vehicle: make, model, colour and registration.
  • What happened: won't start, lost power, flat tyre, warning light, accident.
  • Whether the wheels turn and the steering moves.
  • How many people are with you, including children or pets.
  • Where you want the vehicle taken.

Towing, recovery or a roadside fix?

Not every late-night breakdown needs a truck. A flat battery can often be jump-started on the spot, and a fuel problem might be solved with a delivery. If the car cannot be made safe to drive, it goes onto a flatbed and is taken home, to a garage or to a secure place for the night. Tell the operator honestly what the car is doing and they can suggest the most sensible option.

Flatbed recovery lifts the whole car off the road, which is the safest choice for automatics, four-wheel drives and anything with damage. Our flatbed vs tow truck guide explains the difference.

How our 24/7 service works

Our office is in Walsall and takes calls through the night. You get a price before anyone is dispatched. For breakdowns further afield, we arrange the job with the nearest vetted partner driver rather than sending a truck from the other side of the country. The operator will give you a realistic arrival window on the call, based on where the nearest available driver is at that moment.

If you are somewhere you feel unsafe — an unlit lay-by, a lone stretch of road — say so. It changes how the job is planned, and if you are in immediate danger you should call 999 first.

If you are alone or vulnerable

Breaking down alone late at night can be frightening. Tell the operator if you are on your own, have children with you, have a medical condition or are somewhere isolated, because that affects how the job is planned. Keep your phone on and charged, and if the battery is low, say so early so the operator can agree a plan for the driver to find you. Let a friend or family member know where you are and share your location with them too. Stay with the vehicle only if it is safe to do so, and never get into a vehicle with someone who has not been confirmed by the operator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get car recovery in the middle of the night?

Yes. Auto Squad Recovery takes calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and gives you a price before a driver is dispatched.

Should I wait in the car at night?

On a motorway or fast road, no — wait behind the barrier away from traffic. On a quiet street, staying inside with the doors locked is usually safer.

Where will my car be taken at night?

Home, to a garage of your choice, or to another safe address you give us. Tell us on the call so the price covers the full journey.

Is night recovery more expensive?

Every job is quoted individually and you are told the full price before dispatch, whatever the hour.
