Breakdown Cover vs Pay-Per-Use Recovery
Is annual breakdown cover worth it, or are you better off paying per use? We compare the options honestly so you can decide what's right for you.
Annual Breakdown Cover
AA, RAC, Green Flag, etc.
Unlimited callouts per year
Peace of mind for frequent drivers
Often includes roadside repair
£50–£200+ per year even if never used
Long wait times (2–4 hours common)
Often limited to roadside — recovery costs extra
Excess fees on some policies
Vehicle age/mileage restrictions
Pay-Per-Use Recovery
Auto Squad Recovery & similar
Only pay when you actually need help
Often faster response (local dispatch)
Full recovery included, not just roadside
Clear pricing before dispatch
No membership, age or mileage limits
Individual callout can be £50–£250+
No "included" roadside repair attempt
Which Is Right for You?
Choose annual cover if: You drive an older or unreliable vehicle, do very high mileage, or want the peace of mind of unlimited callouts. Make sure your policy includes full recovery (not just roadside) and check for excess fees.
Choose pay-per-use if: You drive a relatively reliable vehicle, break down rarely (most drivers break down less than once per year), or want faster response without annual commitments. It's also ideal if your current breakdown cover has let you down with long waits.
Many drivers do both: They keep basic breakdown cover but call a pay-per-use service when their club quotes 3+ hour wait times. There's no rule against it.
