What to expect

How Long Does Car Recovery Take?

The short answer

There is no honest single number. How long recovery takes depends on how far the nearest suitable truck is from you, traffic and road conditions, how easy your vehicle is to load and how far it has to travel afterwards. A good operator gives you a realistic arrival window on the call and keeps you updated if it changes.

The four parts of a recovery

It helps to think of a recovery as four separate stages, each with its own timing. First, the booking: getting your location, vehicle and destination confirmed. Second, the journey of the truck to you. Third, loading and securing the vehicle. Fourth, the drive to the drop-off and unloading. Delays in any stage add up, and the second stage is usually the biggest.

What makes the truck take longer to reach you

The biggest factor is distance from the nearest available driver, but others matter too:

  • Traffic, roadworks and closures — especially around rush hour and on motorways.
  • Motorway incidents, where the truck may need to approach from a particular direction.
  • Weather: snow, fog and heavy rain slow everyone down and increase breakdown calls.
  • How busy the night is: bank holidays and cold snaps bring spikes in demand.
  • An unclear location, which can send a driver to the wrong side of a junction.

How long loading takes

A car that rolls freely with the handbrake off loads quickly. A car with a locked steering column, a seized brake, a flat tyre or accident damage takes longer, because the driver may need skates, a winch or extra care. Vehicles in low car parks, on steep driveways or down narrow lanes can also need more time to position the truck safely. Telling the operator about any of these in advance lets the driver bring the right kit.

Five ways to avoid delays

Most delays on the day are avoidable:

  • Send a live location pin rather than describing where you are.
  • Mention anything unusual: lowered suspension, a flat tyre, locked wheels, no keys.
  • Keep your phone charged and answer calls from unknown numbers — it may be the driver.
  • Have the keys and locking wheel nut ready.
  • Confirm the drop-off address and who will be there to receive the vehicle.

How we give you a time

Our office is in Walsall and runs 24/7. When you call, we check which driver can reach you soonest — our own truck for local jobs, or the nearest vetted partner driver for jobs further away — and give you a realistic arrival window based on that driver, not a generic promise. If traffic or another job changes that, you are told.

Planned transport, such as an auction collection or a move between addresses, works differently: you agree a collection date and slot in advance.

Longer journeys after loading

Once the vehicle is on the truck, the rest of the time depends on the distance to the drop-off and the roads in between. A short run to a local garage is quick; a transfer across the country is a planned journey, and the driver has to follow the legal rules on driving hours and breaks like any other commercial driver. If the destination is closed when you arrive, such as a garage out of hours, agree in advance where the vehicle and keys will be left so the driver is not held up waiting.

Frequently asked questions

How long will I wait for a recovery truck?

It depends mainly on where the nearest available driver is, plus traffic and weather. The operator should give you a realistic arrival window on the call.

Why do some companies promise very fast times?

A headline time is easy to advertise but depends on a truck being nearby. Ask for an estimate based on the driver who will actually attend.

Does loading a non-runner take longer?

Usually, yes. A car that will not roll, has locked steering or is damaged may need skates or a winch, which takes more time.

Can I book recovery for a set time?

Yes, for planned moves like auction collections or garage runs you can agree a collection date and slot in advance.
