This question comes up most often from people moving something valuable for the first time, and the honest answer is that the great majority of cars in this country travel perfectly well on an open flatbed. Enclosed transport exists for a narrow set of cases where it genuinely earns its cost. Here is where the line sits, so you are not paying for a covered trailer you do not need or putting something on an open bed that should not be there.

What open transport actually exposes the car to
Weather and road spray, essentially. The car is strapped at the wheels and travels above the traffic, so stone chips are far rarer than people assume, and it arrives dirty rather than damaged.
For a daily driver, a modern used car, a dealer stock movement, an auction purchase or a non runner heading to a workshop, open transport is the sensible and normal choice.
When enclosed is worth it
Freshly painted or freshly restored cars where the finish is still curing. Concours vehicles going to be judged. Cars with no glass, no doors or an open cabin. Very high value vehicles where the owner does not want them visible on the road at all.
Notice that most of those are about the car's finish or its visibility, not about the risk of it being damaged in transit.
The practical trade offs nobody mentions
Enclosed trailers cost more, take longer to load because of the confined space and the loading angle, and cannot reach every address. A narrow residential street that a flatbed can just about manage may be impossible for a long covered trailer.
So the decision is not purely about protection. It is protection weighed against access, timing and cost.
